Dare to Care, in Memoriam: Motocross Legend Danny Magoo Chandler

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

The world of motocross lost a true legend with the passing of Danny "Magoo" Chandler. Born in 1959, Chandler's life was a testament to passion, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of a true champion.

Danny Chandler was not just a motocross racer; he was an icon of the sport. In the 1980s, he dominated the tracks, leaving an indelible mark on the history of motocross. One of his most notable achievements was his victory at the U.S. 500cc Motocross Grand Prix in 1982. That same year, he represented the United States at the Motocross des Nations and the Trophee des Nations. In a display of unparalleled skill and determination, Chandler became the first rider ever to clinch wins in both motos at both events in a single year.

However, life threw a curveball at Chandler in December 1985. A tragic accident during a supercross race in Paris left him paralyzed. But even in the face of such adversity, Chandler's spirit remained unbroken. He channeled his energy into promoting mountain bike races and became a staunch supporter of the drug awareness program, DARE.

In a touching gesture of camaraderie and support, in November 2009, Bob "Hurricane" Hannah initiated a fundraising challenge to purchase a van for Chandler. This van would enable him to travel across the country, sharing his story and promoting motorcycle safety at schools and hospitals through the Danny Magoo Motorcycle Safety Clinics. By March, the fundraising goal was achieved, and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, adorned with a graphic scheme designed by Leighton Hubbell, was set for delivery.

Sadly, Chandler passed away on the night of May 4, 2010, at his home in Yuba City, California, due to complications related to his paralysis. He was 50.

As we remember Danny "Magoo" Chandler, we celebrate not just his achievements on the track but also his enduring legacy off it. His life story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the power of the human spirit to overcome challenges and make a difference in the world.
